BPDA (3,3',4,4'-biphenyltetracarboxylic dianhydride) is the raw material of polyimide resin, one of the super engineering plastics, and is used as an important component material for many products in the information and electronics field such as cell phones and copiers.

3,3',4,4'-Biphenyltetracarboxylic acid dianhydride is one of the important monomers for the synthesis of special engineering plastics polyimide. The polyimide synthesized from it and 1,4'-p-phenylenediamine, 4,4'-diaminodiphenyl ether and other diamines has excellent heat resistance, mechanical properties and electrical insulation properties, and is widely used in aviation, aerospace, electronics, laser, new energy and other fields. Among them, the 5% thermal weight loss temperature (in nitrogen atmosphere) of polyimide made by the polymerization of 3,3',4,4'-biphenyltetracarboxylic acid dianhydride and 1,4'-p-phenylenediamine exceeds 600°C, which is high among known polyimides. Therefore, the synthesis method of 3,3',4,4'-biphenyltetracarboxylic dianhydride has attracted the attention of the majority of scientists and technicians and has been continuously explored with the aim of reducing the cost of raw materials, shortening the synthesis process route, etc.

 

Preparation formula

The preparation formula of 3,3',4,4'-biphenyltetracarboxylic dianhydride includes the following reactions.

 

Chlorination reaction

Using phthalic anhydride as raw material, a mixture of aqueous sodium hypochlorite and aqueous sodium hydroxide is added dropwise and a chlorination reaction occurs, and the pH value is adjusted to produce the monosodium salt of 4-chlorophthalic acid.

 

Coupling and hydrolysis

the monosodium salt of 4-chlorophthalic acid undergoes a coupling reaction and hydrolysis reaction under catalyst, co-catalyst and alkaline conditions to form sodium 3,3',4,4'biphenyltetracarboxylate, said catalyst being a palladium carbon catalyst or a nickel-palladium carbon catalyst, said co-catalyst being hydroxylamine sulfate or hydroxylamine hydrochloride.

 

Acidification

Acidification to 3,3',4,4'biphenyltetracarboxylic acid, followed by drying and dehydration to obtain 3,3',4,4'biphenyltetracarboxylic acid dianhydride. The production cost is low, avoiding the use of potassium permanganate oxidation, simplifying the production process, low pollution, and high yield.

 

Applications

Polyimide is used in heat-resistant plastic film, electronic circuit, intermediate transfer tape or fixed color tape of copier and printer, color resist ink, etc. 
Used in the production of polyimide products and its composite materials, pharmaceutical intermediates.
Polyimide monomer is used to manufacture new polymer materials such as resin and PI film.
BPDA is a diamine-containing rigid symmetric polyamide with a long distance between the amine group and the reactive end cap.
BPDA can be used to synthesize high molecular weight aromatic polyamide fibers.
It can also be used to produce hybrid nanocomposite films.
